Fluttering in from the horizon,
\nWing on wing, from the Spring of time,
\nThey come, a gossamer horde
\nSemaphoring in the endless day,
\nThey meet, mate, and provide
\nProvender for their young,
\nAnd then they die.\n

But now from this
\nAnother wave is generated to move on.
\nWhat then? Well, they believe
\nThat crumpling one brood on another brood,
\nAn infinity of butterflies will coax
\nAn archibutterfly to come,
\nAnd lead them from a world of birds and wasps,
\nAnd other accomplices of woe
\nTo where the whole taxonomy will bask,
\nSubjected to eternal shine,
\nAnd all the vacuum of the past,
\nThe hurried haste, the glut of spawn
\nIs justified.<\/p>\n

So what are we to say?
\nWell, birds and butterflies and men
\nForm an economy of souls
\nAt whom we laugh at our own peril;
\nAnd the winged hieroglyphs
\nProvide a puzzle which
\nOur whole life is too short to puzzle on.<\/p>\n

So here we end, all tantalized
